Susannah Scaroni continues wheelchair racing dominance

Scaroni wins Bloomsday wheelchair race after her Boston Marathon victory

Susannah Scaroni, 31, had yet another impressive week in the world of wheelchair racing last week.

April 17, Scaroni won the 127th installment of the Boston Marathon, posting a time of 1:41:45, beating out second place Madison De Rozario by just over five minutes.

This past weekend at the Bloomsday race, Scaroni followed her Boston Marathon victory by posting a time just north of 30 minutes, short of her own course record by four seconds.

Scaroni would win the Bloomsday event for her sixth time, and second in the last two years.

The Bloomsday course consists of a 12k (7.5 mile) race through Spokane, taking runners, walkers and wheelchair riders through different parts of Spokane, going past Spokane Falls Community College, the Spokane River, and the infamous "Doomsday Hill", before finishing at the Riverfront Park.

Doomsday Hill is a part of the race where the racers will experience an elevation gain of around 120 feet in less than three-quarters of a mile.

This was the second biggest turnout for the Women's wheelchair competition at Bloomsday. There were six women racers this time around, with the highest Scaroni participated in being seven twice. In 2019, Scaroni was the only women wheelchair racer.

The Boston Marathon victory and second consecutive Bloomsday adds more accolades to the already impressive resume of the Tekoa, Washington native. She has won gold in the women's 5000 meters T54 event at the Tokyo, Japan 2020 Summer Paralympics, and won bronze in the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in both the women's 5000 meters T54 and women's 800 m T54.
