Serving Whitman County since 1877

Athenaeum Club donates poetry books to WCL

The Athenaeum club donated two local poetry books to the Colfax branch of the Whitman County Library this month.

Focusing on poetry in 2023, the library welcomes and appreciates the donations to its collection.

The titles donated are “Turn Around Time: a walking poem for the Pacific Northwest” by David Guterson and “I Sing the Salmon Home: poems from Washington State,” edited by Washington State Poet Laureate Rena Priest. The library encourages patrons to come in and check out the books soon.

Established in 1885, The Athenaeum Club is one of the first clubs for ladies in Washington.

Initial meetings focused on literature, music, authors, and readings. The group has evolved but continues to enrich the community by sponsoring programs of interest and learning.

In addition, Athenaeum sponsors high school contests for poetry and art, including an annual library book donation to the Whitman County Library. With over 125 years of activities and projects, Athenaeum remains a proud supporter and promoter of the Colfax community.
