County road weight limits lifted

Weight restrictions east of Highway 195 remain in place

COLFAX – On Monday, Feb. 27, during the Whitman County Commissioner board meeting Public Works Director Mark Storey informed the board that weight restrictions on county roads west of 195 throughout the county are all lifted, while the ones east of 195 remain in place.

“We’ve had our county roads restricted to heavy loads since Dec. 27,” Storey said, noting that a lot of the farmers are wanting to move product, and farm equipment.

Storey does want to let people know who are driving with heavy loads that they should still be cautious, due to soft spots in some of the roads.

By lifting the weight restrictions, drivers can no longer be ticketed for heavy loads, Storey explained, but if damage is caused to the road the driver is still responsible for the damage.

Heavy loads can be moved east of 195, if drivers apply for a permit to do so.

To apply for a permit to move heavy loads east of 195, interested parties can call the Whitman County Public Works Department at 509-397-4622.
