Meals on Wheels faces manpower shortage

February 16, 2023

COLFAX — Colfax Council on Aging (COA) is currently seeking volunteers for deliveries for their meals on wheels program.

COA Director Paige Collins stated that in the last couple of years they have lost major volunteer groups, due to not having enough people to participate in delivering meals to the elderly’s home.

“I don’t know quite what we’ll do if, and when we aren’t able to get volunteers for these deliveries,” Collins said, noting that those who receive the meals are some of the most fragile of our community members.

“They need these hot and nutritious meals in order to stay healthy and at home living independently,” she added.

The COA found out Thursday, Feb. 9 that the Baptist Church isn’t able to help anymore, leaving them with four months out of the year to ask community volunteers for deliveries. A list that is not that long, Collins stated. The months to be covered are March, April, May, and August.

“Unfortunately, we end up asking the same six to eight people over and over again if they are able to help,” Collins said, noting that they’re worried the volunteers will burn out.

Collins stated that few groups that are still available to help are the most wonderful people. They count on the LDS Church, Rotary, the Colfax Community Church, Peace Lutheran Church, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and the staff at the Whitman Hospital to cover months throughout the year.

Deliveries are done every day of the year, explained Collins, noting that there are about 12 people who receive them. The process would include picking up the meals at the hospital at 11:15 a.m., delivering them, and then returning the containers to the hospital.

“It takes just over an hour, for people who know Colfax fairly well,” Collins said, noting that the most important thing is having more people on their call list.

If anyone is interested in volunteering, or being on the call list for meals on wheels deliveries call Margie at (509)-397-4305.

“Any more buddies who want to join our list we would so appreciate it,” Collins said, adding that it’s a great way to keep track of the more fragile people in our community.
