Trapshooting season gets underway in Whitman County

COLTON — Trapshooting in Whitman County began early this month, and the Tekoa Gun Club has already seen its first competition of the new season.

The Gun Club is managed by Tekoa High School teacher Ashton Davis, who teaches agriculture education and is an FFA advisor at the school.

Practices usually take place on Sundays at 9 a.m., with the Gun Club’s participants being Tekoa students, many of whom competed for the first time in Colton on Jan. 14.

The participants received a total score out of 50 for the event, shooting one round from 16 yards away and another at the handicap spot located at the club.

Tekoa earned a collective team score of 106 for the event, with the leading marksman being Allison Cliburn with a 36/50 tally.

The remaining scores were: Rubi Ramirez with a 24/50 Savannah Rinehart with a 23/50, Devlin Latkowski with a 23/50 and Kimber Sypher with a 14/50.

Tekoa’s next competition will take place on Feb. 4 at the Othello Gun Club.

The Tekoa FFA will also be hosting a trapshooting competition on Feb. 18 to help raise money for the trapshooting team. The fundraiser will start at 9 a.m. and will be held at the Spangle Gun Club. There will be multiple contests for adults and students.

Adults will have to pay a $15 per person entry fee, and practices will be 10 birds for $3 per person. There will also be games, costing $5 per person and food and beverages offered at the fundraiser.
