HE IS A BIG GERMAN

Chief of Police Asked about a Swindler from Colfax.

Gives His Name As Henry Bahrs, But Some Think He is F.H. Becker.

Chief of Police Mackay is puzzling over the following letter received a few days ago from Ned E. Farmer of 762 Howard street, San Francisco. Many here imagine that the big German referred to is F.H. Becker, whose disappearance from this city, leaving his creditors in the lurch, was explained last week by THE Gazette. The letter is addressed to the chief of police here, and is as follows:

"I understand the people of your town are looking for one Henry Bahrs, who has beaten his creditors and swindled generally about Colfax. Is this true? He has got wind of their looking after him, and I have learned that he is leaving the city this evening over the overland route to the Klondike. He made his brags to me that he landed good people in Colfax by selling wildcat mining stock. IS this true, and is he married? He is a large German. HE wanted me to help swindle the Woodmen of the World lodge, of which he is a member out of $700 or $800. I will give you particulars if you wish. Please answer, either to the chief of police or to myself."

BRIDGE ENGINEERS HERE INSPECT NEW BRIDGE SITE

C.E. Andrews, Architect, and R. B. Wright at Colfax Wednesday.

C.E. Andrews of Olympia, state bridge architect of this state, in company with R. B. Wright, federal bridge inspector, spent a day at Colfax and made a personal inspection of the Main street bridge. Mr. Andrews drew the plans for the Main street bridge and he is taking an active interest in this bridge for the reason that it is located on one of the main state roads of the state.

Just before he left twon Thursday morning he stated that the bridge would be a difficult structure to erect owing to the peculiar location of the stream and the present location of the station building. While in Colfax, Mr. Andrews talked over the bridge plans with the mayor and the members of the city council.

After the consultation, the visitor said nothing had been mentioned in regard to the state furnishing an engineer to supervise construction and no action could be expected unless the city officials took the matter up with the state department

Largest Of Horse Barns

No, this is not a college field house but before razed last week was believed to be the largest horse barn in Whitman County. Its owner, Conrad Ochs, knew of no other to equal its size 154 feet in length, 76 in width, and 36 in height. It was built about 60 years ago four miles southeast of Dusty by James W. Martin and it had a capacity to house 40 head of horses and approximately 150 tons of loose hay. The original farm, homesteaded by Mr Martin, has had but two owners. It and other land was sold by him in 1922 to Mr. Ochs who now has 1000 acres, known as the Eureka farm, and tenanted by his son, Lloyd, and family, although Mr. and Mrs Conrad Ochs continue to make their home there. Salvage from the barn, razed by Albert Deysenroth and crew, will be used in building a large machine shed a short distance from the barn site.
