Lady Bulldogs blow out Lancers

Colfax gets first league win of the season against Liberty

COLFAX – The Lady Bulldogs improved to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in league competition after running away with the lead to the tune of a 59-28 final against their league rivals, the Liberty Lancers.

Colfax wasted no time building a cushion against Liberty, going up 14-6 midway through the first quarter and ending the frame with a 10-point lead.

The Lady Bulldogs didn't let their rivals get back into the game, adding 14 more points to their tally in the second quarter while holding the Lancers to 10, and went into halftime with a 31-17 lead.

Colfax continued to widen the gap between the two squads, outscoring Liberty in the third quarter 22-5 to put the game definitively out of reach with an entire frame to go.

The fourth quarter was the lowest-scoring frame of the game, with both teams putting up six, and Colfax came away with the 31-point win.

"It's always good to win a basketball game and it's always good to beat a good team," Colfax head coach Jordan Holmes said. "So, I'm proud of the kids, but, as usual, there's a lot that we can improve on and it's early in the season. So (Liberty) will play us a tough game at Liberty next month."

After last week's season-opening win against Lakeside, Holmes mentioned continuing to go to the post and attacking teams from there was the key to the squad's success this season, and that showed, with sophomore Brynn McGaughy leading the team with 27 points off of 16 2-point attempts and five free-throw makes on seven attempts.

"(The post play) was good," Holmes said. "We flew to the boards. Brynn did a good job flying to the boards, Lauryn (York) always does a good job flying to the boards, and it was a battle in there in the paint with not a lot of fouls called early on. But our kids were able to be mentally tough and hang in there, which is always good. Liberty's a big team just like we are. They're big in the paint and they're big up front. So this is a good challenge for us to see how our guards play against more physical teams inside when we're driving."

In addition to her 27 points, McGaughy had 18 rebounds and two blocks with an assist, Hailey Demler had a double-double herself with 12 points and 12 rebounds to go with two assists, four steals and two blocks and Jaisha Gibb was able to playmake on both sides of the ball, having four points, three assists, six steals and four rebounds.

Colfax next plays today at 5:30 p.m. against Clarkston High School in Clarkston.
