District volleyball opens in Whitman County

Whitman County teams win on the first day of districts

The Washington District 9 1B and District 7 2B tournaments had their first round of games on Nov. 1, with four Whitman County teams competing and three advancing.

Colfax was the first team to play at 5:30 p.m., hosting the St. George's Dragons in Colfax.

Colfax advanced to the next round of the winner's bracket, defeating St. George's in three sets – 25-14, 25-8 and 25-8.

Stat leaders for the Bulldogs were Brynn McGaughy with 14 kills and 6 blocks, Lauryn York with 14 assists, Jaisha Gibb with 9 digs and 5 aces and Hope Fulfs with 5 aces of her own.

1B volleyball was next, with defending state champions Oakesdale Nighthawks defeating the DeSales Fighting Irish in three sets, 25-5, 25-12 and 25-8.

Stat leaders for the Nighthawks were Gianna Anderson with 6 aces, Samantha Holling with 20 assists, Payton Davis with 8 kills and Jessie Reed with 9 digs.

St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse went to Sunnyside to face the Sunnyside Christian Knights.

The Eagles beat the Knights in three sets – 25-20, 25-11 and 25-3.

Stat leaders for SJEL were Kate Hergert with 2 aces and 3 blocks, Kyra Holt with 2 aces, Kaitlyn Hough with 12 kills and 9 digs and Addisen Becker with 29 assists and 9 digs.

Colton traveled to Richland to take on the Liberty Christian Patriots, and lost in five sets – 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 12-25 and 6-15.

Stat leaders for the Wildcats were Rachel Becker with 20 digs, Grace Kuhle and Holly Heitstuman with 6 kills each, Kaydee Heitstuman with 4 blocks and Sidni Whitcomb with 15 assists.

Colfax hosted the winner of Upper Columbia Academy and Northwest Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 2. In Colfax, Oakesdale will host St. John Endicott/LaCrosse at 6 p.m. tonight in Oakesdale and Colton will play the loser of the Nov. 1 match between Pomeroy and Prescott at 6 p.m. today at either Pomeroy or Prescott.
