October 20, 2022

COLFAX — Bulldogs’ volleyball came out of a week-long break on a win streak – losing a single game aside from tournament competition, and that continued over the past week.

Colfax defeated St. George’s 3-0 with set scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-17 on Oct. 11.

Stat leaders for that game were Brenna Gilchrist with 14 digs, Brynn McGaughy with 10 kills and 4 blocks, Gracie Bofto – who went 18 for 18 serving with 4 aces and Lauryn York, who tallied 10 assists.

Wins continued to come for the Lady Bulldogs, who defeated Upper Columbia Academy 3-0 on Oct. 13 with set scores of 25-17, 26-24 and 25-22.

Stat leaders for that game were McGaughy, who had 14 kills and 9 blocks, Hailey Demler with 9 kills, 4 aces and 18 digs and Jaisha Gibb with 15 assists.

Since the season-opening loss against Pullman, Colfax has yet to lose a regular-season game – and over the weekend the Bulldogs extended their winning ways into tournament play – winning the Liberty tournament.

“(The feeling around the team is) pretty positive,” Colfax coach Megan Olson said. “I think we realize we still have a lot that we need to improve on going forward even with the win streak.”

In pool play – Colfax beat Almira-Coulee-Hartline 2-0 (25-21, 25-22), Liberty (Spangle) Junior Varsity 2-0 (25-14, 25-8) and Okanogan 3-0 (25-21, 21-25, 15-8).

In bracket play – Colfax defeated the Liberty varsity 3-0 (25-23, 21-25, 15-8) and Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 2-0 (25-21, 28-26).

Stat leaders for the tournament were Ava Swan with 21 digs and 12 blocks, Gilchrist with 7 aces and 26 digs, McGaughy had 45 kills and 11 blocks, Bofto went 44 for 46 serving, Demler had 46 kills to go with 30 digs and 12 blocks, Hope Fulfs had 7 aces, Gibb had 10 kills to go with 4 aces, 27 assists and 36 digs and York had 16 kills with 7 aces, 72 assists and 35 digs.

Colfax played against Northwest Christian (Colbert) at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 in Colbert.

“I think (the tournament) was a good confidence booster for us,” Olson said. “Especially going into the last two weeks of this season. We played hard, I thought. We did some good things. We served well, which has kind of been a struggle at times. We had a player get injured and we had to overcome a little adversity there with a lineup change. But the girls came together and it was a good day for us.”
