Colfax volleyball opens fall season with loss

Bulldogs lose competitive, five-set match against the Greyhounds in season opener

PULLMAN – The 2021-22 season saw the Colfax volleyball team go 9-3 overall and undefeated in league competition. The season ended with a playoff berth and two straight losses to the Raymond Seagulls, but the team has been a perennial playoff team for the better part of the last decade, and looked to continue that trend Tuesday, Sept. 13 against the Pullman Greyhounds in Pullman.

The result was not what the Bulldogs wanted, coming out on the losing end of a five-set match, but the energy and the atmosphere was a good learning moment for the team.

“For our first match of the season, the atmosphere in the gym was awesome,” Colfax coach Megan Dorman said. “So just to come in and still be a relatively young team... they did a great job.”

Colfax won the first set 25-20, lost the second set 14-25, won the third set 25-21, lost the fourth set 27-29 and lost the fifth set 11-15.

“They hung in there and gutted out some long rallies,” Dorman said. “Nothing to hang our heads on.”

Dorman went on to say that the match could’ve had another result on any given day.

“It’s just about getting playing experience,” Dorman said. “And you can only do that by playing matches. So playing more matches and getting that chemistry piece and getting better communication is important. And the skills – our serving and our passing is definitely something to key on. But I think any given day, that game could’ve gone either way. It was a great match for Pullman and us.”

Brynn McGaughy had 15 kills and seven blocks while Jaisha Gibbs had 24 assists in the close loss.

Despite the loss, going to five sets against a 2A school is a good sign for a Bulldog team that looks to continue the tradition of making the playoffs, and will look to take the first steps in securing a berth to the state tournament in the coming weeks.

Colfax hosted Reardan at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. No information was available at press time.
