USDA offers conservation assistance

COLFAX – The deadline to apply for the 2023 USDA Conservation Stewardship Program is Oct. 13.

The program is open to producers seeking technical and financial assistance with conservation efforts.

Under the program, farmers can receive payments for managing, maintaining and expanding conservation measures like planting cover crops and buffer strips, as well as improving pollinator habitat.

Farmers can also receive help with irrigation monitoring, herbicide application, grazing systems and more.

Applicants will be required to provide a map showing conservation boundaries.

Terre View roundabout opens early

PULLMAN – Work on the single-lane roundabout located at Terre View and North Fairway Road

is now open to all traffic ahead of the originally scheduled completion date of August 19.

The project was started on May 9, designed to increase pedestrian and motorist safety while maintaining traffic flow at a more fluid pace.. The goal to finish before the start of WSU Pullman classes on August 22 was met ahead of schedule.

“The City is proud to fully re-open a key intersection to the community that’s safer, more cost-

effective, and better for traffic flow,” said City Public Works Director Shawn Kohtz. “We

appreciate the cooperation and execution of the local contractor, Motley-Motley, Inc., as well

as the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board for grant funding support

throughout this process.”

Mobius Center visits Palouse

PALOUSE – As part of this year’s summer reading finale Oceans of Possibilities is putting on a Coral Reef show, Palouse and Uniontown brances of Whitman County Library are hosting the Mobius Discovery Center.

Explore the Coral Reef with Mobius at the Palouse School upper gymnasium on Friday, August 26 at 10 a.m. Also at the uniontown Community Building gymnasium on Friday at 1 p.m.

Both events will be held inside a digitalis inflatable dome and is expected to last 25 minutes with a limit of 20 attendees per viewing. Multiple viewings will be hosted to accommodate those waiting to view the presentation.

Water Shut Off Notice South Hill

PALOUSE – Water will be shut off to the south hill in Palouse starting Monday, Aug. 22, begining at 7 a.m. and will last approximately 6-10 hours.

The City asks residents to ensure they have enough water to supply their needs during this period. Residents are also asked to make sure that all their faucets and fixtures are off to prevent the danger of flooding when the water is turned on if they are to leave their house. It is also advised to shut the power off to water heaters.

After work is completed, the City advises residents to run cold water for a few minutes to clear the line of air and colored water.

Colfax Musical back on stage

COLFAX – This upcoming school year brings back the Colfax School District’s annual fall musical Nov. 18-23.

This year’s production will be ‘Oliver!’ Auditions for the play will be during the first week of school.

The cast will need 25-30 junior and senior high school students. There will also be 20 elementary students.

The cast is not limited to those that are enrolled in the district. Home-schoolers are also encouraged to participate.

Colfax schools online register closing soon

Colfax – Online registration for students returning to Colfax School districts started on Aug. 15. Registration must be completed by Friday Aug. 26 at 12 p.m.

The process of online registration must be completed in order for students to attend the 2022 school year. Information on teachers is located under the scheduling tab in Skyward on http://www.csd300.org.

The Colfax School District open house will be Thursday, Aug. 25 from 5-7 p.m.

The first day of school will kick off Monday Aug. 29 at 8:15 a.m.
