County library district receives $20,000 grant

COLFAX – The county library district is among 77 awarded a $20,000 Acton Family Giving COVID Library Relief Fund grant.

“This is a post-COVID, get-back-to-normal activity for libraries,” Colfax branch manager Shirley Cornelius said. “This grant was offered to rural libraries across the nation. I have been here for six years and we have never gotten one.”

Grantees are academic, correctional, public, school and tribal libraries from 32 states and Puerto Rico.

Only two rural libraries in Washington received a grant.

“We are buying a bunch of STEM games to help with school and in our library branches, which is about $8,000,” Cornelius said of the funds’ use.

Additionally, funds will be used to expand Internet coverage and activities in libraries.

“We are expanding our hotspot coverage and have a pottery class in the library. Everything will be free for people that come to that,” Cornelius said.

“We are also buying a bunch of games. We are just going to help libraries that are already in towns. I am really excited. It just gets us in a place where we can bring more community events out.”
