Bulldogs best

Reardan, 4-3

The local Bulldogs earned their post-season berth by upsetting Reardan, 4-3, in a loser-out, winner-to-state game Saturday, May 14.

The Bulldogs came from behind for the win.

In the first inning, Reardan scored 2 runs. The former Indians added 1 more run in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs tied it in the fifth inning with a late 2-run, 2-strike single from Mason Gilchrist.

In the fourth, pitcher J.P. Wigen surrendered 6 hits, but Reardan didn't score.

The score remained tied until the top of the eighth.

That's when Colfax's J.J. Bodey came up with a big base hit and RBI to right field, putting the Bulldogs in the lead, 4-1.

On the mound, Wigen had 5 innings pitched, and J. Peterson pitched 3.

Colfax also topped Kettle Falls, 9-1, in the district opener May 10.

The Bulldogs ended with a 33 at-bat total to Kettle Falls' 24.

Wigen pitched 7 innings, and for 10 strike outs against the norther Bulldogs.

"We were able to put up 6 runs in the first that carried us for most of the game," Coach Scott Parris said. (Kettle Falls pitcher) Graves settled in fine in the next couple innings, but J.P. Wigen was pretty sharp for us allowing just the single run in the first inning."

That win propelled Colfax into the district semifinal against Jenkins (Chewelah) Cougars.

The local boys lost, 5-1.

Jenkins had 25 at-bats, while the Bulldogs had 23.

Alex Mortenson pitched for the Bulldogs, allowing only 1 hit through the first 6 innings.

Colfax got 3 hits in the seventh.

"McCrae (the Jenkins pitcher) was pretty tough...," Parrish said. "I thought Alex threw outstanding for us again.

"We've called on him to face up against the best teams and pitchers and he's given us a chance in every game."

The Cougars played a flawless game and didn't strike out once. Parrish noted that it was no surprise they're among the best teams in the state.
