Businesses can direct taxes

COLFAX – Local business owners can direct taxes back into the community under the Washington Main Street program.

Washington businesses can direct their B&O or PU taxes to the Colfax Downtown Association instead of paying taxes and letting the government allocate the funding, local officials said.

Businesses get a 75% contribution credit to use towards the taxes owed for the following year and they also get to use that contribution as a charitable donation write-off for the current tax year, Downtown Association Executive Director Whitney Bond said.

The funds assist in providing facade grants and downtown beautification projects, promoting tourism, assisting small businesses and more, she said.

“It really is a great way to keep these dollars local and ensure a brighter future for Colfax every year,” Bond said.

“If a business wants to apply but doesn’t operate in a designated Washington Main Street community, that’s OK. You can still participate and direct these taxes to our organization.”

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. March 31.

“Don’t worry. The process is relatively quick and straightforward, and we have included excellent step-by-step instructions,” Bond said.

“We’re happy to help if you need additional assistance.”

Participants don’t have to pay in full until Nov 10. Participants can choose how they want to make the payments.
