Grant funds to preserve old barns, cemeteries

SEATTLE - Money from two state grant programs is available for owners of historic barns and stewards of historic cemeteries.

The Heritage Barn Register is a statewide list of historically significant barns. Owners are eligible to apply for matching grants to assist with barn stabilization and rehabilitation projects.

The Historic Cemetery Preservation Program is to honor veterans and support the preservation of historic cemeteries through funding.

Both initiatives are programs of the Washington State Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation and administered by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation.

Approximately $1 million in grants are available for barns and $300,000 is available for cemeteries.

Online applications forms are online at preservewa.org/programs/grants/.

The deadline to apply was extended to Nov. 7.
