Retired police chief keeps working

PULLMAN — Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins continues working for another year after his announced retirement in June.

Mayor Glenn Johnson announced the change on Thursday after meeting with City Administrator Mike and Jenkins.

“Jenkins’ decision was made with full consultation with his wife, Malinda, and after participating in interviews with the three finalists who were vying to replace him as chief following a nationwide search,” stated Johnson.

None of the three candidates for police chief were chosen to replace Jenkins.

“Following the interviews, there was a wide range of opinions regarding the qualifications of the candidates, suitability for this community, and ability to lead the Pullman Police Department at this stage of their careers,” stated Johnson.

The candidates went through virtual and in-person interviews with community representatives, law enforcement personnel, and city department heads.

Jenkins said he wasn’t leaving Pullman after retiring.

He served as chief since 2010 and been in law enforcement for 47 years.

“We are grateful for the leadership Jenkins has given us this past decade and how he has made himself available to our residents during national police incidents and controversies,” Johnson said. “Changing his retirement plans to help the city and the department during this challenging time is just another example of why he is such an outstanding and admired leader.”
