Colfax library listed on state heritage register

Neo-expressionist 1960 building selected for list

COLFAX — The Whitman County Library’s Colfax branch is listed on the Washington Heritage Register.

It is recognized for the historic significance of the neo-expressionist design and its importance in the education of county residents.

The 1960 building was designed by Spokane architect Warren C. Heylman, whose work also includes the Spokane International Airport and the Parkade Plaza parking garage in Spokane.

The Colfax library is the first of his buildings named to the state’s Heritage Register.

The listing came about after Sue Hallett, Friends of Whitman County Library president, researched and prepared a nomination. Her work included the history of the building as well as stories from residents about the library’s community importance.

The Washington Heritage Register is administered by the state’s Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. Begun in 1971, the register includes buildings, structures, sites, districts, and objects deemed significant to local or state architecture, history, engineering, archaeology, or culture.
