Summoned for extortion

Series: Crime Briefs | Story 12

PULLMAN—A Georgia man has been summoned to appear for charges of extortion and criminal impersonation after police responded to a harassment call at the WSU resident hall in March 2019.

According to the police report, the reporting party told officers she had been contacted via Instagram with pictures of herself nude or only wearing underwear. The sender followed with a demand for more such pictures or those would be sent to family and friends.

The reporting party told officers the pictures had been originally taken by her and sent to a boyfriend or the boyfriend had taken them. According to the report, the boyfriend had never shared the photos and was upset by the incident.

Three days later, the reporting party was contacted by another Instagram account with the same photos and demands. She did not respond to the threats.

After applying for search warrants to Instagram, officers were able to track the account back to Jordan Bowen of Newnan, Georgia.

Bowen was contacted by Newnan police regarding the case and allegedly admitted to creating the fake accounts, according to the report.

During the investigation, Georgia law enforcement found Bowen in possession of child pornography, and he was arrested for that crime.

Bowen has been summoned to appear at Whitman County Superior Court Aug. 14. He has been charged with two counts of extortion in the second degree and two counts of criminal impersonation in the first degree.
