WSU Interfraternity Council sets alcohol guidelines

The Washington State University Interfraternity Council passed its first executive order of 2020 Jan. 26, which will restrict social events with alcohol following the death of WSU fraternity Alpha Tau Omega member, 19-year-old Samuel Martinez, Bellevue, Wash.

Martinez died Nov. 12 from acute alcohol intoxication, otherwise known as alcohol poisoning.

The executive order declares that there should be no social events with alcohol present between Sunday 8 a.m. to Thursday 5 p.m.

The order states each group is required to hold its members accountable for the individual behaviors and violations of organizational bylaws and codes.

The council sent out a development initiative to prevent future tragedies.

The initiative states “each chapter will be required to host an in-house risk management and alcohol education programming with a speaker, approved by the council.

Each chapter must provide attendance through photo evidence and have 80 percent of chapter membership complete a survey to receive credit for the alcohol education program.

According to the initiative, any chapter or individual in violation of possessing or consuming alcoholic drinks above 15 percent alcohol-by-volume will be referred to the Greek Standards Board and the chapter will face social probation and possibly removal.

Alpha Tau Omega was temporarily suspended by WSU and remains under suspension.
