Firework sales, hours

Colfax

Sale of legal fireworks from the stand at Rosauer's lot began Friday at noon. The stand, which is operated by Colfax Rotary, was open from noon to 8 p.m. each day until the Fourth of July when they will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., according to Bob Lothspeich, who is heading the project for Rotary.

Proceeds from the fireworks sales support the Colfax High School softball team, cheerleaders and possibly other sports groups.

The fireworks are sold in a trailer parked at the southwest corner of the Rosauer's parking lot.

Discharge of fireworks under the Colfax city code is allowed from noon June 28 until noon July 5. Except for those days, discharge of fireworks is banned inside the city limits. Public displays are allowed when authorized according to state law.

PULLMAN

Sale of fireworks in Pullman officially started Monday with several stands to be in operation around the city. Pullman Chief Gary Jenkins in a report June 26 pointed out discharge of fireworks under Pullman city code is limited to Wednesday, July 3, and Thursday, July 4. Hours of discharge on Wednesday were from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. and hours on the Fourth will be from 9 a.m. until midnight. Discharging fireworks outside of those time restrictions can result in a $100 civil penalty fine, according to the chief's report.

Fireworks stands in Pullman have been inspected to insure they will sell only legal fireworks.

The Washington State Patrol and state Fire marshal's office are conducting a media blitz about fireworks. The WSP advisory points out fireworks purchased on tribal lands are legal to discharge only on tribal lands, and they become illegal when taken off tribal lands in the state.

Residents are advised to check for "safe and sane" markings on the fireworks they purchase.

Two of the most common illegal fireworks are firecrackers and bottle rockets.
