REPORT OF MALNOURISHED CATTLE NEAR DUSTY

The Whitman County Sheriff's office is investigating reports of malnourished cattle in the Dusty area after a pair of local residents raised concerns to County Commissioner Michael Largent.

Largent said he received two separate calls last week from “concerned neighbors” about sickly looking cows nearby. After visiting the pastures and assessing the severity of the situation, Largent said he determined law enforcement should handle the issue. He recorded video and photos of the cattle and pasture conditions, then notified Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers and turned over the footage he captured.

Although he stressed he is no expert on cattle, Largent said both groups of cattle in question appeared very thin and their pastures “seriously over-grazed.”

The pastures in question are located near Dusty on State Route 127 across from the Country Bible Church and at the intersection of State Route 26 and Rock Spring Junction.

Largent stated there have been “ongoing issues” with the two pastures previously, although this was the first time he was made aware.

“I didn't realize how many people had had concerns for so long,” Largent said.

It is unclear what further steps, if any, will be taken, however, Largent stated, “It is now up to our law enforcement and prosecutor's office as to what should and will be done.”

Myers was unable to be reached for comment.
