April 21, 1893

Edward H. King, the Oakesdale attorney, was yesterday arraigned in the superior court on a charge of forgery, in having affixed the name of an Oakesdale woman to a legal document without her knowledge or consent, it is alleged.

The hearing in the Hay station assault case took place before Justice of the Peace Dillon at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. The defendant is George Frye, and he was charged with an assault to commit murder by George Krentz, a neighbor. Frye sold the prosecuting witness some fence posts and barbed wire last month, and on April 2 received an invoice for 15 bales of wire. On the following day, he missed two bales and immediately went to Krentz's place and accused the latter of theft.

J.M. Harper has built a fine, large barn upon his farm on Union Flat, with a flooring capacity of 40x50 feet. The opportunity which is afforded for an enjoyable dance was not overlooked by the young people of the neighborhood, and they have prevailed upon Mr. Harper to announce a May Day social dance, to which his neighbors and friends are cordially invited.

April 19, 1918

At a meeting of the Commercial Club Wednesday, the members went on record in favor of celebrating the 4th of July and at the same time they voted in opposition of using fireworks on that date.

"The danger of fire is great," said one of the members, "and to guard against the danger, the people of this city should stand strongly opposed to the use of fireworks and firecrackers on that date."

An overflow crowd was present at the courthouse Tuesday evening to attend a meeting of the patriotic league. A new feature was added to the meeting by the school children who, accompanied by their teachers, were present and led patriotic songs.

April 16, 1943

Alice L. Burr, 22, native of Moscow, Idaho, was arrested at Pullman Saturday on a charge of stealing the automobile of Charles Cleveland, in whose Spokane home she had been employed as a domestic. Brought here by Deputy Sheriffs Leon Myers and Dean Hickman, she was turned over to a Spokane deputy sheriff and jail matron,

Officers here said she admitted theft of the car and also $20 in $1 gold coins and a gold nugget valued at $100, from the Cleveland home.

Four St. John high school girls have become nominated by their classes for queen of the annual community fair, to be crowned after the parade April 27. Coronation of the queen will be one of the highlights of the annual community event, which begins with judging of livestock Friday and ends with a dance Saturday night. A horse show staged by the St. John Saddle Club usually follows on Sunday.

Stuart Wagner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wagner, was seriously injured Wednesday evening when he fell into an auger. He was rushed to the Deaconess Hospital in Spokane. He has two broken bones and several cuts and bruises.

Glen W. and Lyndia DeBord have sold the Del Mar Tavern at 103 N. Main to Herbert K. and Patricia Peterson of Yakima for $10 and other considerations.

Before last Wednesday, most county residents never knew that a flight route for Naval aircraft extended over Whitman County, but local pilots knew it, and they saw it as an accident waiting to happen.

Last Wednesday it happened.

A Whidbey Island-based Navy A-6E Intruder attack aircraft and a Grumman Ag-Cat spray airplane collided near Diamond injuring three aviators, two of who remain hospitalized.

Keith Graham, 40, is listed in serious but stable condition at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.

The navigator of the jet, Cmdr.

James Jacobs, 44, suffered a broken arm and was taken to Deaconess Medical Center, then transferred to Fairchild Air Force Base, where he underwent surgery to repair the broken arm.

He was listed in good condition Tuesday.

The pilot of the A-6E, Daniel Dugan, 31, was in satisfactory condition at Sacred Heart Medical center, then transferred to Fairchild.

The Town of Garfield is exploring the option of joining the Whitman County Library District. Mayor Jarrod Pfaff brought up the topic at the April 9 city council session. Garfield is among seven towns which contract with the library district for services. Another seven towns have opted to be included in the library district.
