Colfax Arts Council announces second Inspired Palouse

The wonder of the Palouse has long been captured by a variety of artists over the years. Continuing that tradition, the Colfax Arts Council has announced the dates for the second plein air-inspired exhibit and sale of works that capture the unique beauty of the Palouse country.

Inspired Palouse is a juried exhibit of plein air works. Plein Air is a French term for art meaning it was done in the open air, on site. While Inspired Palouse artists are not required to work outdoors to make their entries, it should still have the feel, capturing the immediacy, and be a site that is identifiable within the Palouse.

A jury of artists will accept the art to be exhibited and select winners for three cash awards: $300 for first, $200 for second, $100 for third. There will also be a $100 prize to winner of the People’s Choice.

An artists’ call is expected to be issued by the arts council this month or next. Artists have until the end of September to create their art in any media they choose. By Sept. 29, artists should submit a digital photo in jpeg format and an artist’s statement to the arts council. The artist’s statement should say something about the artist, selection of the subject and the way in which it was depicted. That information will be included in the exhibit as a point of interest for viewers and purchaser.

After selection, artists will need to drop off their works at The Center in Colfax Oct. 13 from 12 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will be put up Oct. 20 and 21 and will open to the public Oct. 23. The exhibit will stay open through Nov. 17 and the public will be able to vote for the Peoples’ Choice award. The reception, sale and awards will be Nov. 17, 5:30 to 7 p.m. The reception will also feature hors d’oeuvres and drinks, including complimentary wine.

Last year, the Inspired Palouse’s inaugural event drew 39 art works from 18 artists. The arts council hopes to surpass that number this year. Artists came from the Colfax area, Whitman County, Spokane, Lewiston and as far away as Anacortes.
