Christmas present?

Our Grinch-O-Claus president says he’s bringing us a big present for Christmas. He’s putting all this on our credit card, though, over a trillion dollars’ worth. And while you will get maybe an orange or a candy cane in your tax stocking (maybe even a lump of coal), the rich kids will be getting the yachts and jets and Ivanka jewelry.

Call your senator or representative in Congress, 202-224-3121, and tell them to just vote no.

Steve Swoope,

Topics of Interest

Over the past two years the Whitman County Library system has provided our local communities and schools with excellent opportunities to hear prominent historians give detailed presentations on their topics of interest.

Twice I have had the privilege to take my St. John-Endicott High School United States History classes to presentations hosted by the Whitman County Library in St. John.

Operation Firefly, the story of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion presented by Eastern Washington University Professor Robert L. Bartlett and the commonly unknown story of a special unit of U.S Green Beret soldiers sent into South Vietnam to assist the Vietnamese Army presented by local historian and folk singer Hank Cramer proved to be excellent presentations for both community members and students in attendance.

I would most importantly like to thank the Whitman County Library system and St. John Librarian Clancy Pool for hosting such beneficial events for our local community members and students. By hosting such events, it provides both community members and students an opportunity to learn about historical events and topics that are often times left out of traditional text books and films. I would like to encourage local residents and educators to support the Whitman County Library system by attending future events hosted by our local libraries.

Ethan White

St. John-Endicott High School History Teacher
