Malden Market to host first Show & Shine

The recently opened Malden Market will host a Show and Shine car show and swap meet Saturday, July 1, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We are having a fundraiser to revitalize the building and to get the necessary permits to carry perishable foods,” said Karena Wilcox, Malden Market owner. Funds will go toward fixing the roof.

Wilcox has lost product due to the leaky roof, faulty hot water heater and three-compartment sink, among other things.

Wilcox anticipates more than 100 vehicles will show up to the event.

Rosalia Chamber of Commerce has donated its signs from the Battle Days car show. A Malden town block will be dedicated for the vehicles to park and be displayed. The show is open to tractors, trucks, motorcycle, cars, hot rods, classic RV’s and bicycles.

Vendors for the swap meet have already lined up with more expected to show the day of the event. A 40x60 foot army tent has been set up to provide shade for attendees. Wilcox noted there will be food, vendors and handcrafts.

“There’s a bunch of locals,” she said.

The Show and Shine also has offerings for children with the kids show for model and pinewood derby vehicles. Wilcox’s 12-year-old autistic son will judge the kids’ entries at noon. There will be family games with egg toss, bobbing for apples and a three-legged race.

“I’m just excited,” said Wilcox.

The event is free to the public. Vendor and swap meet spaces are $15 with set up at 8 a.m. Car show judging and people’s choice will be at 4 p.m. Judges for the car show will be the event sponsors, some of which come from Spokane.

Wilcox opened the Malden Market with the goal of bringing some more life to the town.

“I really feel like it has brought a sense of community back to us,” she said. In the past few weeks locals have been coming to the store with historic items, including a bucket from the original Malden Market.

“It’s bringing so much of Malden history into one place,” she said.
