Downtown storefront grant application deadline April 1

The Colfax Downtown Association has announced the first deadline date for storefront grant applications. The deadline is April 1.

Colfax Unified Executive Director Valoree Gregory said this will be the first round of awards, and funds are coming from the $2,500 grant recently awarded to the Downtown Association from Umpqua Bank. She said the $2,500 could end up being split among multiple applicants.

“It will be $2,500 in the first round,” said Gregory. “The committee wanted to give out a grant now so that the people will have the chance to work on their buildings in the summer instead of the snowy winter.”

The storefront grant was established this year when the Downtown Association received more than $21,000 in tax-incentive pledges from local businesses through the Washington State Main Street Program, which allows businesses to pay their business and operation taxes to communities enrolled in the Main Street Program. In return, businesses can receive a tax credit up to 75 percent of the amount of the donation.

“We'll have more grants to give out by the end of the year,” said Gregory. “(The) $21,000 will come in by the end of December.”

Gregory said as more funds become available, more application deadline dates will be announced. She also noted the entire $21,000 may not be pledged this year to the storefront grant.

“I don't know how much they're going to designate to that. I'd guess at least half,” she said. “We might keep some just to be safe and have funds to start next year.”

The storefront grant application can be found online.
