Colfax V-netters aim at 10-0 league run

Abbie Miller goes down to her knees to dig out a ball in Saturday's volleyball match against Reardan. Colfax senior Sarah Kraut is behind Miller.

The Colfax volleyball team will travel to Ritzville to play one of two NE league matches remaining on the schedule before the league playoffs.

Final round of the league run will be against the Tekoa/Rosalia Timberwolves next Tuesday at Rosalia.

The Bulldogs start their final road swing with an 8-0 record after defeating league foes Liberty in three competitive games last Thursday and Reardan, also in three games, Saturday. Both matches were on the Colfax court as part of Bulldog homecoming festivities.

Saturday Colfax will travel to Shadle Park for another non-leaguer against a Greater Spokane League foe.

The NE playoff competition is slated to start next Saturday, Oct. 29, at the gym of the league leaders for the north and south divisions. The Bulldogs already have a two-match lead on the south side with Liberty in the number-two slot and figure to be the hosts for the south side.

District playoffs will continue at Davenport and Reardan Nov. 1, and the finals will be at St. George's Nov. 5 to determine the three NE entries into the state show at Yakima's SunDome.

Liberty's Lancers Thursday made the trip to Colfax as the only league team which has won a single game over the Bulldogs. They took the game win when the two teams hooked up at Liberty two weeks ago. Colfax won that match in four games.

The two teams played close Thursday in the first two rounds, but Liberty made a charge in the third game. They stacked an 8-3 lead, and the Bulldogs did not erase the edge until it went to 10-10.

Coach Molly Carr's Liberty squad still refused to bend, and the game went 22-22, 23-23, 24-24 and 25-25. Colfax finally took the game at 28-26.

Junior Carmen Gfeller hit two kills against the tough Liberty defense and then booked an ace. The Lancers were hurt with one serve hit into the net.

Line score for the Colfax match win, this time a sweep, 25-20, 25-21 and then 28-26.

Gfeller finished with 22 kills, four blocks and four aces. Kylie Kackman put up 27 assists and hit 13-14 serving, and Abbie Miller had 16 digs and a 15-15 serving night.

Saturday, Colfax swept Reardan 25-13, 25-20, 25-10 for the last league match on the home court.

Colfax dominated the first game, and coach Sue Doering activated the bench to get all players court time.

Seniors honored were Taylor Garcia, Parker Warwick, Sarah Kraut and Lexi Smith.

Gfeller hit 11 kills against the Indians, and Garcia hit seven. Kackman tapped 16 assists and hit six aces.

Kayla Naff hit three kills for the Indians, and Gabby Lee put up three assists and hit three kills
