Colfax to host regional XC qualifier

Cross country runners from WIAA's NE and SE districts are scheduled to convene at Colfax Oct. 28 for the cross regional cross country races, the last stop before the state all-B finals race. The race will be at the Colfax Golf Course.

The regional, which will mix three SE District 9 teams with the NE District 7 runners, will offer state entries for the top 35 boys and the top 21 girls. Team entries will go to the top five boys teams and the top three girls teams.

Qualifiers from the regional will compete in the all-B races at the state finals the following week back at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

The Colfax regional run, which will be over approximately the same course used for the big Pac-12 race last fall, will follow Saturday's NE league race which will be at the Wilbur Golf Course.

Asotin's Panthers figure to be the top club in the race. The Panthers edged Northwest Christian and St. George’s when the league's top three teams hooked up Oct. 4 in a race here. Asotin's boys won by a slim four points over the Crusaders.

Asotin senior Thomas Weaklund posted a strong win over NWC's Jack Ammon in that race and figures to lead the pack through the last two races before the state meet. Tyler Shea, also of NWC, and Jacob Clark of Wilbur/Creston have consistently posted top finishes through the fall campaign.

Madison Ward of St. George's rates as the top girl finisher for the NE league. Ward dueled with Emily Adams of Waitsburg/Prescott when NE and SE teams met at the Oct. 4 race in Colfax. Both are seniors.

Asotin's girls posted a three-point team win in the Colfax race over Northwest Christian.

Tekoa/Rosalia sophomore Gavin Merritt has been the top county finisher in the NE races toward the end of the season and will be shooting to make the state cut here in two weeks.

Junior Chase Baerlocher has been leading Colfax contenders in the late races, and Carson Cloaninger has attempted to work his way up in the finish ranks after being sidelined with an injury early in the season.
