Eagles lose to Wellpinit in debut

After a cancelled first-week game at Odessa due to lack of functioning field lights, the St. John/Endicott/ LaCrosse football team started the season with a 58-20 loss to Wellpinit.

Playing at home, quarterback Reagan Harrison scrambled into the endzone on a 12-yard run for the team's first touchdown. In the third quarter, Levi Bailey scored on an 85-yard kickoff return before Harrison ran in the Eagles' final touchdown.

The Eagles trailed 46-12 at halftime.

“Overall, a huge improvement over last year,” said coach Ken Gering of his team.

On the line, Brady Pitts stood out.

“Our freshman center was almost spotless,” Gering said. “His snaps were incredible.”

The Eagles will play next at Selkirk Friday, near the Canadian border, north of Ione.

“Pack a lunch, we're going to work, boys,” Gering said. Garfield/Palouse bye: Following an opening week loss at Troy, the Vikings had a bye Sept. 9 and will play Friday at Lakeside (Plummer, Idaho) in another non-league game.
