Palouse Days starts Friday

A new way to drop ping pong balls onto the street, a dunk tank, a kids area and the return of the chalk art contest will mark Palouse Days, happening Friday and Saturday in Palouse.

Friday starts with chalk art from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., royalty will be crowned at 7 p.m. – moved from Saturday to not conflict with a volleyball tournament at the high school.

Preparations are underway for the annual town celebration.

“This is the week we do or die,” said Debbie Goetz, president of Palouse Chamber of Commerce.

Saturday morning begins with the Lions Club pancake breakfast at West Main Street, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by an 8 a.m. fun run/walk and opening of the 34th annual Palouse Days car show at Hayton-Greene Park.

At 10 a.m. is the parade, complete with grand marshals the VIKotics, the Gar/Pal High School robotics team which competed at the world championships in St. Louis last spring.

The group devised a way to drop the ping pong balls immediately after the parade. The balls are later turned in for prizes.

Next is the egg toss followed by dunking of Police Chief Jerry Neumann, Mayor Michael Echanove, and/or various Garfield/Palouse High teachers. A cornhole tournament will also get underway, and the noon whistle will start the duck race on the Palouse River.

Ducks can be bought outside the pancake breakfast.

Throughout the morning will be a farmer’s market with fruits and vegetables from Pioneer Produce of Palouse.

The Lions Club will serve hamburgers from their trailer at Heritage Park, where a new kids’ area will be set up. Hearth of the Dragon will serve pizza.

The Heidi Keen Barley Bar Relay starts at 4 p.m. followed by the band Tone Sober on stage at 5 p.m. Blue Highway follows at 8 p.m. The groups will play from a stage on Beech Street at the beer garden.

“The weather’s looking good, and we’re looking for another great Palouse Days,” said Goetz. “Friday afternoon we start to close off roads and getting the dunk tank filled with nice, warm water.”
