Colfax netters top Genesee in opener

The Colfax volleyball team turned back a stubborn Genesee team in three games Tuesday night to open the season. Coach Peter Crowley and the Genesee Bulldogs visited Colfax as the only small school team to defeat Colfax last year in its run for a third straight Washington 2B state title.

Colfax took the opener 25-11, 25-13 and 30-28. In the third game Genesee, which has five seniors on its roster, came within a point of taking the third game, but Colfax managed to hang around and get the win after Gretta Geier hit the last point on a block.

For the match, Colfax hit 74 of 78 serves and rapped 16 aces.

In the first game, Johanna Stolle, the German exchange student, rolled off six straight serve points, and Piper Cai, now a junior, served five straight points with four aces.

Coach Sue Doering noted Carmen Gfeller, also a junior, proved to be unstoppable at the net. Gfeller finished with 12 kills in the three-game match.

Genesee cracked a 9-6 lead in the second game, but Colfax came back with the strong net play.

Genesee also rolled out a 20-16 lead in the third game, but Geier moved to the serve line and rolled out six straight points. Three of them were for aces.

Colfax hit 23-20, but the G-dogs did not fold, and it went all the way to the 30-28 verdict with Geier booking match point on a block.
