The fair opens

The Palouse Empire Fair starts its annual run today. The fair is a long-held tradition on the Palouse.

The tradition itself goes back to ancient times. Fairs were a time to celebrate and give thanks for harvest. It is little different today.

This fair is an opportunity to lay aside work, take comfort in knowing that the crops are harvested and to celebrate with others the end of the season. It is also the time to take a deep breath before preparing for the upcoming year.

For others, it is a chance to see some parts of rural life they are not familiar with and enjoy some traditional country hospitality.

The Palouse Empire Fair has something for everybody. That is a tired expression, but it is true, even if that something is simply sitting on a bench and enjoying the sights, sounds and aromas.

Some fairs are enormous, overwhelming and expensive. State fairs can take on the feel of some gigantic side show.

The Palouse Empire Fair is more of a family event. It has a comfortable feel and manageable proportions.

Attendees often know the kids showing their animals and the people providing food and drink. Local service clubs take part, and local volunteers are everywhere. From the exhibits to the fitting and showing to the local crafts and food, the fair is designed for local participation and local interests.

Although there is always something new and different, the fair reflects the region in many ways.

Then, of course, the carnival is a fun change of pace, and the rodeo offers excitement and thrills.

Some details are in the story in this week’s Gazette. More information and a schedule of events were published in the special fair section in last week’s Gazette.

The slogan for the fair this year is “There’s fun in the air.” There may be a few pleasant surprises, too.
