Reardan opener rates as tough Colfax football start

Colfax gridders will head for Reardan Friday night to start another run in the NE league campaign. The Bulldogs will be going up against a Reardan team which clipped them 40-34 here last year in the final home game of the season.

Reardan took the win by scoring three times in the last quarter.

"They needed to score twice to take the win, and they did it," coach Mike Morgan recalled.

Coach Eric Nikkola and crew are expected to greet Colfax with its traditional cruncher wishbone offense. Reardan likes to find a weakness in an opponent's defense and pound the ball right at that point.

"I seen them run the same play eight straight times," coach Morgan commented.

Reardan graduated just three seniors off of last year's team, they figure to have mostly veterans back on their home grid against the Bulldogs.

One of the key players in the grad list was running back Dustyn Rettkowski who took a big toll on the Bulldogs last year.

Colfax will make the trip to Reardan after again participating in the league jamboree last week at Ritzville. Other participants were the host Broncos, Davenport and Northwest Christian.

Morgan credited Davenport with the top jamboree performance. The Gorillas scored twice against Colfax in their nine-minute segment.

Colfax was unable to book a score when they had the ball on offense.

Coach Morgan credited the Colfax line with doing a solid job for the most part Friday on both sides of the ball.

He noted the key gain for the jamboree outing was getting video of what the Bulldogs were doing right and what they were doing wrong. The Friday jamboree session was followed by an extended Monday screening session.

Morgan noted the Colfax decision to go back to the veer offense means players this year have to learn a system which is new to them. Colfax for the last three years has used the pistol offense.
