Another water main burst hits Pullman

Pullman faced its third water main break in as many months Sunday morning when the main under Main and Spring streets burst, flooding the intersection there. The burst impacted a couple of businesses, which had water shut off while city crews repaired the main. Water was turned off to the businesses and turned back on later in the day. No businesses were flooded as a result of the standing water on the street.

Public Works Director Kevin Gardes said it took about seven hours to repair the main, which burst as a result of a pipe split that was “at least five feet long.”

“There was an old section of concrete street underneath that, so it took a little while to get to that,” he said.

Previous water main breaks in Pullman resulted in slight flooding on College Hill Sunday, May 29, and major flooding on Grand Avenue April 19, which sent more than one million gallons of water from the Military and College hill water towers into the street, flooding the businesses in the Tractor Town Square.

Gardes said the main bursts have all been unrelated. The street will be repaired this week, he added.
