Colfax targets 20-0 sweep, clinches league

Steve Brown of the Timberwolves leaps into the plate Saturday while Colfax catcher Kyle Appel awaits a throw.

Colfax rolled off four more baseball wins over four days to run its league string to 18-0 and lock up a top finish in the NE league run. The last Bulldog league stop in the NE run will be Saturday, April 30, at Davenport against the Gorillas.

Closest to Colfax in the NE race are Northwest Christian and St. George’s, who each had 14-4 marks at the start of the week.

Colfax beat St. George’s 12-2 and 13-6 at McDonald Park Tuesday to drop the Dragon’s standing to 12-6. The Dragons at the end of last week had just two defeats but were spilled twice by the Wilbur/Creston Wildcats Saturday, April 23.

Colfax pegged a 12-2 win over the Dragons in the first game Tuesday, April 26, with Danny Robinson allowing four hits, fanning five batters and walking zero. He threw just 54 pitches in the five-frame game.

Colfax shelled the Dragons for 14 hits with Kenton Lyman tagging a single, double and triple. Dustyn Hall singled and homered.

In the second game, Hall started on the mound for Colfax, and Parker Huber relieved him in the fifth inning.

Hall had a two-hit ball game on the books going into the fifth inning when he began to get tired. He struck out eight but finished with nine walks. Huber went into the game with the bases loaded, and the Dragons tapped him for a double, but he managed to keep the lid on for the 13-6 win.

In the first game, Tekoa/Rosalia scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead before Colfax pitcher Keith Gfeller dialed in for the win. Gfeller struck out nine T-Wolves and allowed four hits.
