County issues bid call for fair roofing project

Fair manager Bob Reynolds went in front of the Board of County Commissioners Monday to detail for them an upcoming roof project on the events center at the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds.

A call for bids has been issued for the project, which will consist of application of a roof coating system over existing roofing.

“I consulted three different contractors, and it was suggested that we go with a roof mate-type coating system,” Reynolds told the commissioners.

Reynolds said he was able to obtain a Google Earth image of the roof on the building, and he discovered that the acrylic elastromeric roof coating system, also known as roof mate coating, was used in the past for the roof.

“We've used that before for repairs,” he said.

The call for bids asks for a minimum of a 10-year product warranty.

The roof project, which is expected to be funded from the county's capital improvement project fund, will follow the renovation at the event's center that has been undertaken by the Palouse Empire Fair Foundation for the past year.

“We had planned on doing the roof this year, and we were waiting for them to finish their project so we could start ours,” Reynolds told the Gazette.

Reynolds reported that the renovation there is close to wrapping up.

“They are staining (floor) concrete right now, and they are doing the finish work,” he said.

The project there involved a 24-foot addition along the north side of the building, in to which the kitchen and office space moved. The previous kitchen and office sites will now be used as additional meeting space.

“We're all real excited for the foundation project to be completed,” Reynolds said, noting how well it has turned out and those who have contributed to it.

Bids for the upcoming roof project are due to the Board of County Commissioners by 10 a.m. May 12, and a bid package would be expected to be awarded at the following commission meeting May 16.
