Garfield approves Amazon account for low tool prices

The town of Garfield has approved the creation of an Amazon account to price tools in order to search for the lowest price in conjunction with a local search.

The matter came up in February, when Public Works Assistant Mark Phillips suggested the town set up an account, saying tools can be bought for 25 percent less than local stores.

Phillips indicated to the council that he would still buy small items such as oil and oil filters locally.

“We thought we could save money,” said Garfield mayor Ray McCown. “We need to spend money locally, or in our county or state. Of course the council outvoted me.”

On Feb. 24, the Garfield council voted to approve the creation of the account with the stipulation that before any purchase is made through Amazon, a local search will be done to see if the item can be found for the same or better price. The motion carried unanimously.

Purchases over a certain limit require the Garfield City Council's approval.
