Bulldog girls charge Eagles to final buzzer

Colfax girls made a big charge Tuesday against West Valley but came up short at the end to finish 0-2 in the Eagles' Holiday tournament. West Valley, a 3A team, took the win at 50-47 after fending off the Bulldogs in the final seconds.

The Bulldogs, who led by as many as nine points early in the second quarter, trailed by five points at half and by three points after a close third quarter.

Senior Ashtyn Aune, who finished with a game-high 21 points, led the charge to the buzzer. West Valley had a seven-point lead going into the last two minutes. Aune cut it to five, 42-47, and then added four points on a trey shot followed by a foul shot. Colfax cut it to 47-49 with a toss shot by Sidney Sheer in the last 25 seconds, but the Eagles' Caitlin Hossfield hit one foul shot for a 50-47 lead.

Colfax had the last possession, but needed another three-pointer to tie it and did not collect.

Colfax took off like a rocket against the Eagles, but West Valley, which hit a string of toll shots, tied it at 20-20 with 2:40 left in the first half, and Colfax did not hit another bucket all the way to the break. The Eagles posted a 25-20 edge after two quarters.

Colfax booked the scorcher against West Valley hosts Tuesday after being slammed 52-26 by Cashmere in the first round of the tourney Monday. The Cashmere team rolled up a run of 12 unanswered points early in the game and posted a 21-9 lead by halftime.

Colfax kept pace in turnovers, steals and rebounds, but they hit just nine buckets for the game after taking 28 shots.

Abbie Johnson of Cashmere topped all scorers with 17 points, including eight from the field.

Colfax was topped by junior Taylor Garcia who finished with six points. Senior Scout Cai finished with five.

Colfax Saturday will host Tekoa/Rosalia in all-Whitman County edition of a NE league game. The Bulldog girls will switch to the 7:30 p.m. slot on the schedule for the start of the new year.
