Ochs art exhibit now at library

Horses on canvas by Shellie Ochs.

An exhibit of acrylic paintings by Shellie Ochs is on display at the Colfax Branch of Whitman County Library now through November. This collection of 10 paintings features animals with a rustic quality in wooden frames with barbed wire and other western touches. Ochs lives in Oakesdale and became interested in art at a very young age.

Her husband, a wood hobbyist, enjoys creating the wooden frames that adorn many of her paintings. The exhibit can be viewed during open hours at the library.

Rosalia Garden club

Andy and Camie Gilling, who have lived in Rosalia for seven years after moving from Spokane, was the final winner of the Rosalia Garden Club “Garden of the Month” honor. The selection committee noticed the new rock wall below a retaining wall covered with vines. Bright pink shades of hybrid spreading type petunias blended well.

Ornamental sweet potato vines were eye catching and seemed to glow in the shade with their bright chartreuse and lime green heart shaped leaves.

Although most of the perennials were done for the season, the garden shows promises of continuous bloom in other seasons.

Several container plants have been sunk into the raised bed ground with pea gravel topping. Once the annuals in containers finish their bloom, they can be lifted out and another seasonal plant replaces the previous one.

The club will start monthly meetings Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. at the home of Rana French near Waverly. Members are reminded of the special peony tuber exchange and sale at the meeting. Bring one tuber, exchange for one.

The program will be “Tips on Composting” by Lauren Sunde from Spangle.

French will give members tips on saving and storing seeds.
