Wawawai shelter beams, roof to be replaced

Rotting beams will soon be replaced on a Wawawai County Park shelter after Whitman County Commissioners approved a bid from Alpha Nail for $9,463 at their Monday meeting.

The new beams will be paired with a project to replace the roof, which will be done by County Parks staff and Parks board members this fall.

The contract with Alpha Nail of Colfax calls for the beam work to begin within 30 days and be completed within 60 days.

The two Douglas Fir pole beams were part of the original structure.

To remove them requires the lifting off of the entire roof, which is why the Parks Department will put in the new roof.

As the beams are replaced, County Parks staff will take off the original cedar shake shingles and then cover what remains of the roof with a waterproof underlayment.

The stripped roof – with underlay – will be placed over the new beams.

From there, it will keep until county staff and parks board members get to work installing the metal roof covering sometime this fall.

The cover will be identical to one put on the shelter at Klemgard Park in 2011.

They will install one side at a time, as time and worker availability allows.

“It’ll get done when it gets done,” said Tim Myers, County Parks Director. “The Klemgard roof has held up great. We’re real pleased with it.”

The metal roofs have a 30 to 50-year lifespan.

The rotted beams, if any useable wood is left, will be cut into firewood for the county’s two ranger residences, one at Wawawai and the other at Kamiak Butte.
