Pullman farmers’ market launches 2015 season

Pullman Farmers’ market opened its 2015 season last Wednesday amid rain and clouds that may have kept some consumers from attending.

All vendors showed up ready to go, even with the heavy rainfall throughout the day. Despite the low attendance, market manager Tim Johnston said he remains excited to see the market grow throughout the summer and early fall.

“Our goal is to make it a mid-week family event,” said Johnston. “We want there to be stuff for kids to do; we want there to be music and want it to be vibrant. ... We just want it to be something that people want to come to.”

New to the market, now in its sixth year, is an area for food vendors and music. The market is located in the Spot Shop parking lot at 240 NE Kamiaken Street. Food vendors and entertainers will be located on Pine Street Plaza, just below the market area.

“The goal is that when it’s nice out to have that area drawing people in with the music, and then the signage and the people will be able to let people know they can come up here and actually take advantage of the vendors,” said Johnston. “It’s just one more way to get us some exposure on the main street.”

Johnston also said he is working on getting some semi-permanent shade structures for the market that he hopes will make it more enjoyable for consumers and vendors in the hot summer months.

The market will run every Wednesday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. through Oct. 28.
