Colfax honors

Colfax players honored at last Thursday’s basketball banquet included, from the left, Andra Hamilton, Amara Huber, Carmen Gfeller and Kori Goodwin. Hamilton, Huber and Goodwin are seniors, and Gfeller is a freshman.

Three seniors were honored March 26 when the Colfax girls’ basketball team concluded their season with a basketball banquet. The Bulldogs finished up the year with a sixth-place finish in the 1B tournament after rolling out an undefeated win string in league play and in the district, sub-regional and regional action.

Seniors graduating off the team this year are Andra Hamilton, Kori Goodwin and Amara Huber. The trio also received team honors in balloting, which Coach Corey Baerlocher said was very close this year.

Awards went to Hamilton, most inspirational; Goodwin, Miss Hustle; and Huber, most valuable player. Also receiving a trophy was freshman Carmen Gfeller, voted most improved.

Coach Baerlocher also noted Huber won the league balloting for the league MVP award. Scout Cai, a junior, and Gfeller were selected for the second team all-league.

Baerlocher's season report included a wild account of the view from the bench when Hamilton hit her last-seconds three-point shot for the 48-46 zapper win over Northwest Christian in the district championship game.

Colfax girls finished sixth in the state 2B finals this year after sustaining losses to White Swan and Toutle Lake.

Baerlocher said one regret he had for the season was not preparing the Bulldogs for the "smash mouth" style of play encountered at the state finals.

Other members of the varsity squad were Ashtyn Aune, Katelyn Scholz, Olivia Mellor, Sidney Sheer, Kylie Gronning, Taylor Garcia and Faith Markley.

Assistant Coach Joel Warwick presented awards to junior varsity players. Warwick, who joined the CHS hoop ranks this year after several seasons of coaching AAU, noted the team started the season with two wins, but then ran a string of wins for the rest of the year.

Assistant Emily Dawson, also a first-year coach, assisted. Jayvee awards went to Greta Geier, Shannon Stoke, Emma Neu, Abby Miller, Josie Riebold, Brooklyn Nickerson, Piper Cai, Sarah Kraut, Cheyanne Stokes, Madelyne Avila, Golide Akesson, Parker Warwick and Alexie Smith. Faith Markley and Kylie Gronning were recognized as players who competed with the jayvee and varsity teams.
