The place to start

Rural county communites are trying to stem the tide of shrinking populations and shrinking commercial activity.

LaCrosse and Palouse are classic examples of successes that can come from a commitment and the desire to save a community. Palouse continues to build on past successes. LaCrosse, too, has had successes. They are more recent and, in some cases, it has been two steps forward and one back, but the commitment remains.

Both have accomplished what many thought impossible.

In both cases, the communities relied upon private and public monies. But, it was more than just money that brought positive changes to the towns.

These successes are the result of local people with a common commitment and a widespread belief of what is ultimately possible.

One of the best ways to start a renewal is to support what the community already has. New ventures and new projects need a base. That base is the existing community.

Both LaCrosse and Palouse have struggled for a turnaround. Both suffered setbacks. Both have tried to stop additional decline. Both have.

The common denominator in these two stories is a consensus of aspiration. Grants, private investment and, in many cases, grass roots generosity and risk taking have been essential, but the work and toil of many community members have made the difference.

It basically comes down to individuals—individuals who protect what they have and join together in a common effort to grow on the existing base.

It is a step by step process, but the place to start is with a community consensus simply to support itself. For starters, that may be as basic as shopping locally.
