Palouse to consider new name for Palouse Cove Road

The city of Palouse is set to consider what to rename a street in the next few weeks. Right now, Palouse Cove Road carries the same name in both the city and the county, which was causing confusion for deliveries and potential problems with emergency services.

This spring, Mark Janowski, mapping coordinator for WhitCom, called city officials.

“The problem is when they did the addresses in the city, it was on the county addressing system,” said Janowski. “When the area became incorporated, the addresses remained the same.”

The Palouse City Council first discussed the matter June 11.

Outside the city limits, Palouse Cove Road runs to the Idaho state line.

“It was suggested that it would be easier to change the name in the city versus the county,” Palouse Mayor Michael Echanove said.

At the city council meeting, council members talked about re-naming the city road something derivative of the existing name. A council member suggested that it was an opportunity to name it after someone.

Thus, the council is set to consider ideas at an upcoming meeting. The matter was not on the agenda at the council session last Tuesday, and the next meeting will be July 9.

Mayor Echanove said the cost to the city to change the street name would be minimal. He added residents along the street who willl have to change their addresses will probably bear most of the cost.
