Serving Whitman County since 1877
The idea came from high school culinary classes and touring in a band. Now it’s a new café in Tekoa.
David Kelly, who co-owns the Kelly Café with his father, Richard, noticed something when traveling in a metal band.
“The most convenient, healthy place to eat was always a sandwich shop,” he said.
A few years and some time in the Army later, David decided to open a sandwich shop when given the chance by his dad, who also owns the Tekoa Market.
Re-opening May 10, after running for two months last summer before David returned from the Army, the Kelly Café is now serving sandwiches, salads, appetizers and hand-tossed, brick oven pizza seven days a week.
“Basically the menu is full of sandwiches I really like,” David said. “Everybody could find at least one thing on the menu they would like.”
All together, there are 11 specialty pizzas and calzones, nine sandwiches, five salads and three appetizers (cheesy bread, hot wings and parmesan twists).
“I never knew he could cook this well,” said Richard. “The menu he’s got is fantastic. I’m surprised.”
The restaurant’s décor and music pays tribute to hot rods and motorcycles of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s.
Richard bought the space for the cafe seven years ago. Until June of last year, Café Artisan was there. It closed and the Kellys moved in.
In two weeks, they installed hardwood floors, painted counters, added new shades and fountain machines.
Now they have four employees and stay open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
They offer home delivery in the Tekoa area.
Fridays are $1 beer night and their lunch special is a sandwich, chips and a drink for $7.50.
