Ukulele players to form group

All area ukulele players and enthusiasts are encouraged to grab their instruments and attend an organizational meeting of the Ukulele Players of the Palouse or U POP Sunday, June 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Colfax Library.

Scott Hallett of Colfax is organizing this meeting with the hope of attracting players from all across the region. U POP will be open to people of all ages and skill levels. From beginner to expert, U POP members will provide mutual support, share and play music, improve their skills and most importantly have a great time together.

At the organizational meeting, attendees will discuss their preferences for meeting times and frequency, locations and activities. For more information, contact Hallett.

Master gardener

set for Empire

Master Gardener Phyllis Stephens will give a presentation at the Empire Theater in Tekoa Tuesday, June 18, at 5:30 p.m. Known as the premier voice of Inland Northwest gardening, she has a regular call-in radio show on KXLY and also hosts three weekly garden segments on KXLY-TV, Channel 4. A professional horticulture consultant and landscape designer, she also teaches adult education gardening classes and has been an advisor for Washington State’s Cooperative Extension Service. This event will feature information on perennial plants.

Stephens has been a guest speaker at the Northwest Flower Show in Seattle, the nation’s third largest event of its kind.

Admission will be $10.

Sessions set

on aging services

A number of local providers Wednesday, June 19, will share information and answer questions about the services for the aging. Two sessions are offered, one from 12 to 1 p.m. and the second from 6 to 7 p.m.

Participants include Wellmark Adult Homes, The Courtyard, Whitman Health and Rehab and Gentiva Home Health and Hospice. Find out the differences and benefits of choosing a nursing home, adult family home, assisted living facility or home health and hospice. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

Bank Left

slates sixth

floriade show

The Bank Left Gallery’s sixth annual “Floriade, ” Interpreting Art through Flowers, together with “Gardens and Grapes,” a home and wine tour, will be Saturday, June 22, in Palouse.

The Bank Left Gallery and Bistro will show art and floral installations by local and regional artists, and hold a floral themed luncheon and dinner “from garden to table.”

The Community Center of Palouse will showcase three gardens and homes where local wineries Camas Prairie, Merry Cellars and Wawawai Canyon will share their best wines.

The Bank Left luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m .; dinner is from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“Gardens and Grapes” tours are from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call Mary Estes at 878-1852.

Dance classes open

Summer children’s dance classes are now underway at the Colfax library each Wednesday from 3:30-7:30 and continue through Aug. 14. New students are still being accepted with the classes featuring ballet and jazz. All youth ages 3 through high school can participate. For more information and rates, contact Ana Marie Sears.

Colfax Fraternal Order of the Eagles met May 21 for election and swearing in of new officers. All officers serve one year terms. Officers are Deidra Starrett, president; Joe Colaricci, vice president; Cameron Dove, secretary-treasurer; John Schaut, junior past worthy president; Dano Hardy, chaplain; Billy Swank, inside guard; Jon Aldrich, outside guard, and Marlena Olson, conductor.

Trustees are Brad Persons, Barry Folsom, Jr., Ryan Farr, and Paul Bilderback.

Garvin, Nolen Wyatt, born May 30, 2 at eight pounds, one ounce, to Taylor and Alena Garvin of Pullman. Paternal grandparents are Marcia Garvin and Dave Garvin of Puyallup. Maternal grandparents are Steve and Angie Coombs of Shelton. The baby joins brother, Kael, 1.

Sandberg, Max Joseph, born May 31, at seven pounds, three ounces, to Roger and Heather Sandberg of Pullman. Paternal grandparents are Randy and Natalie Sandberg of Moses Lake. Maternal grandparents are Ann and Dan Drader of Moses Lake. The baby joins sisters Maile, 5, and Lucy, 3.

Schultheis, Bria Kacie, was born June 2, 2013, at six pounds, 11 ounces, first child to Kyle and Stacie Schultheis of St. John. Paternal grandparents are Art and Sue Schultheis of Colton. Maternal grandparents are Ed Shields of Lamont and Carrie Shields of Sprague.

MUSIC

Pianist Eric Fung will perform Bach’s “Italian Concerto,” Chopin’s first “Ballade” and works by Brahms and Strauss in a free, public concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, in WSU’s Bryan Hall.

A Hong Kong native, Fung is the only Chinese pianist awarded the title “Bach Prize Winner” in the 60-year history of the International competition in Leipzig, Germany. His performance of Brahms’ “Piano Concerto No. 1” at Lincoln Center in 2000 led Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times to praise Fung’s work as “mature, refined and elegant.”

ART

An outdoor summer evening in the garden will benefit the Washington State University Museum of Art 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Living in the Garden just north of Pullman.

The third annual museum fundraiser will include hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a silent auction in the conservatory of works by talented local artists. Live music will be played by Pork Pie Hat.

The museum is located on Wilson Road in the Fine Arts Center south of Martin Stadium on the WSU Pullman campus. Summer gallery hours are noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday.
