Campfire series returns to Kamiak Butte Park

Whitman County Park’s Kamiak Butte Evening Campfire programs, which were discontinued several years ago as part of a budget crunch, will return to the area’s summer agenda this year.

The first program will be Saturday, June 1. A “Flowers of Kamiak” hike will be led by parks board member Dan Leonard. Participants will hike up the Pine Ridge Trail to observe spring flowers of the butte.

The program begins at 5 p.m. with a choice of either a one- or two-hour hike. Participants are advised to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy afterwards in the day use area.

The Evening Campfire program will run weekly in June and July, and will feature hikes as well as birdwatching, and events in the amphitheater including a visit with an 18th century fur trapper, a talk about Palouse area geology and songs around the campfire.

“I’d like to have the parks get more involved with activities,” said Leonard, a board member since 2003.

The longtime campfire program was scaled back in the 1990s because of loss of parks staff. It was then continued with volunteers until it stopped altogether in the last few years.

The next program is set for June 8. Leonard will present a visit from an 18th century fur trapper.
