Airport road project slowed

Whitman County Public Works Director and Lead Engineer Mark Storey told commissioners from the port and county on May 6 that construction on the airport road is coming along, but is behind schedule.

Construction crews have wrapped up basic road work from Duncan Springs Road to State Route 26, but the construction company, M. DeAtley of Lewiston, ran out of rock material which put the whole schedule a week or two behind, he said.

Storey estimates it will be the third or fourth week in July when paving begins.

“Hopefully before the (WSU) migration,” he said.

Storey said the lack of rock is the contractor’s problem. However, the crews also have been fighting wet conditions, he said.

The county purchased the grain bins at the Almota Road intersection and will build the road so the stop will be at a 90-degree angle.

“It will be the end of July before we wrap up,” he said.
