Master Class Big Band returns to Tekoa

The 18-piece Master Class Big Band from Spokane will return to Tekoa’s Empire Theatre for a performance April 13 at 7 p.m. The band consists of a veteran rhythm section and horn players such as trumpeteer Michael Lenke, Spokane Jazz Orchestra trombonoist Scotty Engle and saxophonist Paul Plowman.

They are accompanied by high school musicians. After passing a challenging audition, the young players are invited to join the group, rehearse weekly and perform 10-15 times per year.

The band’s songbook includes music made famous by Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Louis Jordan, Natalie Cole, Michael Buble, the Brian Setzer Orchestra and others.

The Master Class Big Band is fronted by a rotating roster of vocalists such as the Civic Theater’s Jace Fogleman, Mead High School standout Gracee McClellan, local jazz singer Julia Keefe and the Hot Club’s Rachel Aldridge.

Admission will be $12 for adults, $5 for students, and free for youngster 12-under with an adult.
