Fire destroys garage

Colfax, Steptoe and Diamond fire units responded to a report of a structure fire on Friday evening.

A garage behind the Cougar Food Mart was fully involved when the first units arrived, according to Clark Capwell, Chief of Colfax Volunteer Firemen.

The fire was so close to a house the back porch started burning, Capwell said, but firefighters were able to knock it down in about four minutes, preventing the fire from penetrating the main part of the house. The garage was destroyed and the back porch of the house was damaged.

Two people in the garage and one person in the house escaped without injuries.

Capwell said he is uncertain about the cause, but officials are still investigating.

Colfax had five units and 11 volunteers respond to the fire. Steptoe had three units and six volunteers respond, and Diamond had one unit and two volunteers respond.
